Since the year 2000, Mario Côté has been slowly collecting, on surfaces of various sizes, the many painterly gestures that are familiar to him. The title of the series is not without irony, because it picks up on the excessive enthusiasm of a spectator, who often seeks to mystify the painter’s studio. This fascination is adopted here by applying a great density of colour to the surfaces, so that the challenge henceforth is to take stock of simple fragments of studio time. Moreover, these “manifest traces” are often presented as a supplement to an exhibition. In fact, these “studio walls” or “complementary paintings” are composed of a meticulous, almost daily, accumulation of coloured pigments combined with the various tools used to create a series of paintings: brushes, spatulas, knives or rollers. Applied progressively, these residues generate conglomerations that bear witness as much to the chromatic range as to the sedimentation of a painting practice over a given length of time.
